Hydrogen fuel cells, fishing booms and joystick outboards in the savvy news ⚓

Hey everyone,

How’s it going out there?

I was starting to think summer was coming until I decided to volunteer for a boat delivery up in Scotland, needless to say it was cold! 🥶

We’re seeing many more of our community members getting back out on the water as restrictions ease in some countries, thank you so much to everyone who has shared their boating adventures with us so far!

For those of you still waiting to get back to your beloved boats, we hope our news update will keep you entertained...

2020 - a booming year for fishing in the USA 🐟

2020 - a booming year for fishing in the USA

Who out there likes fishing? Well apparently COVID-19 has seen many more of our US friends taking up the sport with a reported participation increase of 18% within the US population.

Youth participation even grew to 13.5 million people! Fishing is a great way to get outdoors whilst remaining socially distanced so I guess it’s no surprise, but those numbers are quite amazing! Find out more about what East Coast Maps and Charts savvy navvy covers.

The catamaran powered by yachting’s first hydrogen fuel cell

The catamaran powered by yachting’s first hydrogen fuel cell

Fountaine Pajot will be the first shipyard to integrate hydrogen as an alternative energy solution on its catamarans. The French builder said that, as part of its Odyssea 2024 plan, it has chosen EODev’s hydrogen generator, REXH2, to power its Samana 59 sailing multihull. Equipped with the latest-generation Toyota fuel cells, the generator is designed to perform in harsh maritime environments.

Meet Rolex Yachtsmen of the Year, Mike Martin and Adam Lowry

The high-performance gentlemen of the International 505 class.

Rolex Yachtsmen of the year 2021

“After being shortlisted for sailing’s Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Award an incredible five times, Martin is getting his due. And just as he was on the wire when they won the world championship title, Lowry is right by his side, towering over his skipper as they both open their boxes to flash their shiny new golden timepieces.

Rarely does the crew get a Rolex too, but this time, the selection panel felt that it was impossible to recognize the accomplishments of one without the other. It’s another victory of sorts, for non-Olympic dinghy sailors and forgotten crews alike.”

Joystick Control for Single-Engine Outboard Boats

Joystick Control for Single-Engine Outboard Boats

Docking a single-engine outboard boat just got a lot easier.

Have you ever considered controlling your outboard with a joystick?

“The term “joystick” was coined by pioneer aviators, and the invention must have added to the exhilaration and joy of flight. Joy was not the emotion we experienced when we grasped the joystick of a Bennington R24 pontoon equipped with the new Yamaha Helm Master EX control system, but we will admit to excited anticipation.”

Title: Around These Islands in 12 Ports - Exploring maritime Britain and Ireland by sail

Around These Islands in 12 Ports - Exploring maritime Britain and Ireland by sail

Thanks to the author Jonathan Winter for featuring savvy navvy in this fantastic book! Here’s a little background on it...

In 2019 Anne and Jonathan Winter set out on a 2,500-mile six-month voyage around Great Britain and Ireland aboard Yacht Nova. The purpose was to explore the coast and harbours of these islands, including 12 significant ports.

Collaborating with a think-tank called These Islands, they dug deeper into the history and identity of coastal places, inviting authors and historians to write an article for each of twelve ports.

These articles and the story of their voyage is available as a book and e-book, produced in support of The Mission to Seafarers, whom they met along the way.

Jonathan Winter is a social entrepreneur and lifelong cruising sailor. He holds an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification and a degree in aeronautical engineering, which fuels his interest in new boat designs.

Jelte Liebrand - CEO & Founder of savvy navvy

"If you compare it to navigation on land, say I want to get to Italy, I'd drop a pin on Google Maps and in 100 milliseconds I know how to drive there, I know where the traffic is, I know what to avoid. But at sea, it's a whole different ball game." savvy navvy Founder, Jelte Liebrand, recently caught up with Kelly Moulton from Sensar Marine.
